The 10 second balance test linked to longevity.

In the quest for a long and healthy life, researchers have stumbled upon a surprising indicator: the simple 10-second balance test. Recent studies suggest that this quick assessment could offer insights into our longevity and overall well-being.

A study published online June 21, 2022, by the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that people who are unable to stand on one leg for 10 seconds in middle and later life have almost double the usual risk of premature death. Researchers evaluated the health information and balance test results of 1,700 people (ages 51 to 75, and all free of walking problems), and then followed them for seven years. During the study, 123 participants died of various causes. After taking participants' age, underlying conditions, weight, and other factors into account, scientists determined that failing the balance test was associated with an 84% higher risk of dying within the study period, compared with passing the balance test. The concept behind the 10-second balance test is straightforward. Stand near a counter or anywhere you can feel supported in case you need to lean in. To balance on your right leg, keep your arms at your side and slowly place the top of your left foot on your right calf. Hold that way for 10 seconds (if not possible, release slowly). Then repeat the same on your left leg. Repeat this daily to see improvement.

Moreover, improving one's balance through simple exercises and activities has been shown to have significant benefits, not just in terms of longevity but also in enhancing daily quality of life. Balance training can help prevent falls, maintain mobility, and support independence as we age.

Take the test, challenge yourself, and discover the potential benefits of improving your balance—it might just be the key to unlocking a longer and more fulfilling life.
