Fun Things You Can Partake in, From the Comfort of Your Home.

As we spend more time cozied up at home during the long winter days, there are various fun and engaging activities we can partake in right in the comfort of our homes. Winters can be cold and long, so let’s get involved and explore new activities. All of the activities we have included in this list are easy to partake in and carry minimal or no cost.

  1. Physical and Mental Activities from Home

  • Join a virtual (or in person) Chair Yoga class - Yoga is well known for improving mobility, balance, strength and providing mental relaxation. Non-for- profit organizations such as Etobicoke Senior Services (ESS) and St. Demetrius offer virtual classes for Chair Yoga, meditation and others. The classes are free and you can pre-register via calling or e-mail (we will drop links for you below). They also offer in-person programs if that is something you are interested in, as well as Tech help and others.

To view St. Demetrius Programs, go to https://stdemetrius.ca/community-programs/.

To view ESS Programs, go to https://www.esssupportservices.ca/what-we-do/.

  • Other organizations such as Ontario Society of Senior Citizens Organization (OSSCO) offer frequent free virtual events and seminars, such as Laughing Circles, mental well-being, educational seminars on tax credits and others. Visit OSSCO’s Eventbrite page by clicking here to register for an upcoming event.

2. Learning Opportunities from Home

  • Did you know that the Toronto Public Library offers a free Home Delivery Service? Certain eligibility requirements are in place and interested persons must apply. Customers receive a monthly delivery, free of charge, of up to 20 items. Items can include regular print hardcovers and paperbacks, large print books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, and DAISY Talking Books. Click the following link to learn more and get reading: https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/home-library-service/.

  • The Toronto District School Board has a ‘Learn 4 Life’ initiative, where seniors get a 40 per cent seniors discount on adult daytime programs and evening classes in the arts, computers, business, outdoors, cooking, handiwork, languages, and music. Some of the programs are in person (i.e. pickleball) and there are quite a few ‘remote’ learning programs available, such as the ‘Basic Jazz and Rock Piano Level II’ remote learning program. Visit https://tdsb.ebasefm.com/programs/welcome/browse and key in what you are looking for. And don’t forget about the 40% seniors discount.

  • Learning Unlimited is another wonderful local organization that offers virtual courses for seniors. They provide University level lecture series during Fall and Winter for a nominal fee. Lectures are each week and are either 8 or 10 weeks in length and available via zoom (course depending). Lectures start as of the week of January 7th, 2025. To Register for one of their curated courses visit https://www.learningunlimitedetobicoke.com/.

3. Join a Carebee Monthly Member Exclusive Event - focused on gathering and having fun virtually (bingo, scavenger hunts and more)

  • Once a month we meet with our community virtually for an hour for our Member Exclusive Events and we aim to have some fun and share laughs together. In November we hosted our Fun Bingo and come January 23rd we will be meeting for a virtual Scavenger Hunt! No registration necessary, all members will receive an invitation to the monthly event.
